COSN Visits Scotland and Learns about Glow, World's First National Education Intranet, Designed and Delivered by RM Education

The Consortium for School Networking (COSN) recently visited several schools in Scotland to learn about Glow powered by Kaleidos. Glow, the first nationwide intranet for education created in partnership between RM Education and the Scottish Government, digitally connects every district, school, teacher and student within the country.

Click on the links below to read blog entries from COSN members and learn how teachers and students throughout Scotland are breaking geographical and social barriers. Many key issues are discussed. Everything from an environmental savings due to a reduced amount of printing, to whether the actions of a small handful of students who may abuse a network dictate whether or not everyone can continue to use it. Glow opens up new opportunities for education. As it continues to grow, more uses for this national education intranet are being discovered.

Going Green, Saving Green

"Public and private schools alike are realizing that going green is a no-brainer.” According to http://www.buildinggreenschools.org/, “If a green school saved $100,000 per year in operational costs, that's roughly enough to hire two new teachers, buy 200 new computers or purchase 5,000 new textbooks.”

In this digital age, the idea of going green seems almost impossible. The use of computers and interactive technologies is essential for exciting and engaging teaching. The downside is that it's a major contributor to electricity bills and carbon footprint. The hardware also takes large amounts of energy to produce and dispose of. RM is balancing these issues with products that reduce paper & power consumption, leave a smaller carbon footprint and can be produced, delivered, and maintained more efficiently.

RM Products For the Green-Minded

Reduce your carbon footprint with the new RM One featuring;
- Recycled plastic - c20% used in case design
- Available with ecoquiet technology to reduce your school's energy consumption
- Re-useable monitor at end of PC's life
- 'eco' mode settings to reduce the RM One's energy consumption

The leader in innovative technology is taking its marketing to Web 2.0. Through this blog, our new Twitter feed and coming soon our Facebook page and iTunes podcast, customers can stay in constant contact with RM news, specials, and promotions.

Gartner Research released a report that highlights the different ways that companies are adopting Twitter for business use. Although Twitter was originally intended for communication among individuals, a number of organizations have begun to actively participate on the platform. However, not all companies are using Twitter in the same way. Some are tweeting, some are just listening, and some really savvy companies are doing both. The RM Twitter feed will include special offers to customers, and also provide a place for customers to share their needs, ideas, and concerns.

At RM, we are offering both. The RM Twitter will offer deals, specials to customers along with listening to their needs, ideas and concerns. The RM Blog updates will be announced through Twitter as well. Califone International and RM Educational Software Form Strategic Partnership

Collaboration promotes the use of podcasting for both teaching and learning

SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (August 7, 2009) – Califone International, Inc., and RM Educational Software, Inc., have formed a strategic partnership to promote the use of podcasting for both teaching and learning.

Podcasts provide new ways for students to interact with the content matter, as well as to demonstrate their learning. By creating podcasts, students can display and extend their creativity using audio as a means of self-expression. In addition, teachers can use podcasts to communicate regularly with parents by posting school updates on their Web site. They also can publish lesson guides in a podcast format to help students who many have missed sections, or who simply need reinforcement when completing homework assignments.

“RM Podium was designed specifically for teachers and students. It provides an easy way to script, create, edit, publish, and promote podcasts,” said Gino Baffa, Channel Account Manager for RM Educational Software. “With the Califone MP3 player, students and teachers can create and share valuable content with ease. And, since the Califone MP3 Player is designed for the education market, keeping in mind the safety of students and the need for durability in the classroom, we feel that these two products are truly complimentary.”

“Podcasting is empowering students from being consumers to producers of information,” said Tim Ridgway, VP of Marketing, Califone International, Inc. “In combination with RM Podium, users of the Califone MP3 Player can participate in and create activities easily and efficiently, including science projects, book reports, interviews, homework, school news, professional development training sessions, and more.”

RM Podium and the Califone MP3 Player are especially useful in special needs and ELL classrooms, where students may need additional reinforcement or teacher guidance outside the classroom. Recording a podcast in a language learning environment can illustrate to the teacher how well a student’s pronunciation, diction and understanding have progressed over time.

Visit http://www.rmeducation.com/podium/overview for more information about RM Podium and to download a free 30-day trial.

The easy-to-use MP3 Player includes dual headphone jacks – an industry first – making it ideal for learning centers, language labs and libraries. The company’s teacher-tested 8100-HP headphones are included with the MP3 Player, which is made with rugged ABS plastic for durability and classroom safety.

To order, contact a Califone dealer. For more information on the full line of Califone products designed for the education market, and safe for school and library use, call 1-800-722-0500, or visit www.califone.com to view and download the entire Califone catalog.

Singin' & Singin' Recieves 2009 Classroom of the Future Impact Award

Singin’ & Signin’ received the 2009 Impact Award for Classroom of the Future on Thursday, May 14, 2009, in a celebration aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum in San Diego, California. Four awards were presented: The Inspire Award, The Innovate Award, The Achieve Award, and the Impact Award, which is a Best‐Of‐Show Award encompassing all three awards, and is given to one program that best embodies all three attributes: inspire, innovate, and achieve.

The Classroom of the Future Foundation recognized Singin’ & Signin’ as an innovative math program, truly impacting students. Through easily recalled childhood songs and chants, the program teaches complex concepts using accompanying signs and gestures that easily
adapts to any curriculum.

Through Singin’ & Signin’s partnership with RM Educational Software, Inc., the program is now available in RM Easiteach format, an interactive technology, which is part of RM’s award winning family of whole‐class tools.

Siegrid Stillman, co‐founder of Singin’ & Signin’, explained, “Singin’ & Signin’ changed the way I teach math. I always knew I was a good teacher, but when my students would receive their state assessment scores, they were often lower than I had expected, so my teaching partner [Ken Ostroske] and I created Singin’ & Signin’.”

When reporting the four‐year outcome data, Kristi Frisbie, Managing Director of Singin’ & Signin’, said, “I think you'll find that Singin’ & Signin’ will change the way teachers teach math forever. It is so simple, yet revolutionary, because it teaches the way kids learn!”

About Singin’ & Signin’: Singin’ & Signin’ began as a program in 2004 for sixth grade classrooms. After three years of research, a company named Singin’ & Signin’ LLC launched its program nationwide, headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The founders remain sixth grade teachers in San Diego County, California. Learn more at www.rmeducation.com/nickynote+

GLOW, Scotland's National Education Intranet delivered by RM, Receives Highest Honors at 2009 Global Learning Impact Awards

The IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS GLC) today announced the results of the world’s annual competition of high impact use of technology to support and enhance learning. Glow, the world's first national intranet for education, comes out on top receiving the highly distinguished platinum award.

Managed by Learning and Teaching Scotland and delivered by Research Machines (RM), Glow is the world's first national intranet for education. Preparation for Glow began with phase zero, which involved checking that Glow could use existing data, provided by local authorities, to automatically create the anticipated 800,000 accounts. Glow was then piloted over a number of stages, all of which introduced new components. Feedback was then taken from the 13 local authorities and 3000 users (made up of teachers, students and local authority staff) involved in piloting. This feedback led to further improvements and the launch of the full system at the Scottish Learning Festival in 2007. Since the rollout of the live service began in 2007, 16 out of the 32 Scottish local authorities are now live with Glow and numbers are rapidly continuing to rise. The central Glow team is working with local authorities to ensure Glow is rolled out in an appropriate manner tailored to the needs of each local authority. The main purpose of Glow is to enhance the quality of learning and teaching in the classroom by fully supporting the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence. Learn more about Glow at http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/.

The Learning Impact Awards (LIAs) recognize use of technology to improve learning across all education segments and in all regions of the world. The finalists were evaluated by an expert panel of judges and the attendees at the IMS annual Learning Impact conference and Summit on Global Learning Challenges. The Learning Impact conference brings together leaders from supplier, educational, and government organizations focused on improving access, affordability, and quality of education worldwide. This year’s conference featured record attendance of global leaders from 25 countries and six continents. The LIA awards are unique in that they recognize the use of technology in context. Nominations include not only information about the technology but how it is used by an education provider. In addition, the entries are evaluated according to eight criteria of impact, including improving access to learning, improving affordability of learning, and improving the quality of learning. For more information about the Learning Impact Awards, go to http://www.imsglobal.org/pressreleases/pr090514.html.

Hyannis, MA - April 9, 2009 - RM Education, the U.S. division of RM, a world-wide supplier of technology-based curriculum products for education, announced today the release of RM Math Player, their first interactive math curriculum program available for individual math teachers.

Now math teachers in grades 6 through 12 will have access to the same content found in the award-winning RM Math Framework Edition, but without the need or expense of purchasing licenses for the entire math department or school. RM Math Player is available for individual users, making it a very affordable option for bringing 21st century learning into the classroom. The curriculum is aligned to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) as well as state-based standards. Subjects include: Calculus, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Numbers and Operations; and the content is self-contained on easy-to-use CDs for both PC and MAC users.

“We have found that the introduction of interactive technology to the classroom can greatly benefit the understanding and retention of difficult math concepts.” said Kevin Pawsey, Chief Excecutive United States RM Education Software Inc. “RM Math Player enables teachers to deliver lessons that are exciting, fast-paced and speak to all student learning styles resulting in improved student performance and test scores. We also understand that not all schools have the budgets to support the installment of a school-wide interactive math application, which inspired us to develop a product that could be utilized by a single teacher vs. the entire school.”

Another Satisfied Elementary School in Georgia

This is an e-mail that Rich Alder received from a very satified customer, Shallowford Falls Elementary School.

Hi Rich (Alder),
The installation went well. You should REALLY be proud of your installers and how professional they are. Lee, Mike and Josh were a joy (yet again) to work with. I look forward to working together again! I also appreciate the extra time you take with us to make sure everything is to your high standards. I know with your new job your time has been limited and yet you still took care of Shallowford. We REALLY appreciate it.

Have a nice, long weekend!
